Sonia is in charge of sustainability, ESG, and human rights matters at Soleil Metals. She works under the direction of CEO Ivan Salas, in close collaboration with Oscar Pezo, Compliance Director at Soleil Metals, and in coordination with the executive leadership of the OCIM group.
Based in Lima, Sonia leads the sustainability function at Soleil Metals, covering ESG legal advisory, environmental and social standards, labor and human rights, permits and licenses, administrative litigation, and the development and implementation of integrated environmental and sustainability management systems. She acts as Soleil Metals’ liaison with governmental and regulatory authorities on ESG matters and ensures continuous alignment between field operations and the principles governing the OCIM group’s integrated and responsible value chain.
A lawyer registered with the Lima Bar Association since 1999 (CAL No. 53099), Sonia has built an outstanding career in extractive sector governance, environmental management, and human rights. She spent more than a decade in the oil and gas sector, most recently as Environmental Manager and Human Rights Lead at PetroTal Peru, where she was responsible for environmental management and human rights matters and played a leading role in the company’s ESG strategy.
Previously, she held senior corporate responsibility positions at Gran Tierra Energy and Petrolífera Petroleum del Perú, and served as an advisor to Peru’s Ministry of Energy and Mines, as well as Commissioner in the Native Communities Program of the Ombudsman’s Office.
At the National Society of Mining, Petroleum and Energy of Peru (SNMPE), Sonia served as President of the Human Rights Committee from 2020 to 2023 and is currently Vice President of the Socio-Environmental Committee, where she promotes standards aligned with the OECD, the ILO, and the UNDP. She participated in proceedings before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights as part of the legal defense team of the Peruvian State in UN CERD proceedings concerning extractive activities and human rights. She completed postgraduate studies in Environmental Management and Ecology at Ricardo Palma University and is currently finishing a program on Sustainability Strategies and Opportunities for Industry at MIT Professional Education.
Sonia brings to Soleil Metals a rare combination of legal expertise, operational experience in complex territories, and recognized industry leadership. She strengthens the sustainability capacity supporting the formalization of artisanal mining in Peru and reinforces the evidentiary foundations upon which the OCIM group’s responsible and traceable value chain rests.
“The depth of Sonia’s experience in environmental governance, human rights, and stakeholder engagement is exactly what Soleil Metals needs at this stage of its development. Her arrival strengthens our ability to operate according to the highest international standards while remaining grounded in the realities of Peruvian artisanal mining,” explains Ivan Salas, CEO of Soleil Metals.
